And Let There Be Peace On Earth
by B.D. Harpold aka Cltcgdss

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

STAT to the Dining Room…
"She's choking…"
"Get her on the floor"
"Swipe her mouth, while I do thrusts…"
"Breathe, come on breathe… "
And she breathed, and coughed, and I cried with relief.

O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear savior's birth

"Benton's been drinking again …"
"He's off the hook …!!!"
"He's cussing out the staff and swinging stuff"
"Shouldn't have those young guys in here!"
"He's nothing but a homeless addict…"
"No he's not, he lives here..."
"We should call the police…"
And I wept at their lack of understanding ...

Silent Night, Holy Night
All is calm, all is bright

"Karen died about 5 min ago…"
"O man…"
"It was time, she hung on 6 years…"
"I know… but still …"
"yeah …"
"You going up to see her?"
"No, I want to remember her alive…"
And in my mind they placed the sheet over her... and I cried.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace,
Sleep in Heavenly Peace

©B.D. Harpold

Amidst the pain, the tears, the smiles, the stress, the loneliness, the fear … our hearts can't help but touch and be touched by those we have chosen to serve, in my case, the men and women of an inner city nursing home…
