Your First Christmas
by Geddes Fielder

Your first christmas
lights
our home this year.

You do not know
as yet
what the holidays
might bring.

You do not
know
the colours
of holidays past
with all the streaming
memories
echoing in each
brightly shining decoration.

We your mothers
sit
with all our lives around
the tree
while you
give us the gift
of seeing
for the first time
every pine needle,
every colour.

Your first christmas
looms
and love
is high
higher than the star
that lights the pilgrim
home.

And your first christmas
will not be a memory
to you.
You will forget
the cooing of this
day,
you will forget the tree
and the stories
that we tell you
later
will become your memory.

And one distant day
when christmas is no
longer new
perhaps the echoes
of your christmas past
will ache remembered
laughter
in your soul.
