Eighty Nine

Stopped at a traffic light on Route 10
on the way to Marty's Shoe Outlet to find
flat black shoes she could wear with pants

my grandmother's face suddenly looked
different. I dont remember ever noticing the
wrinkles where her ears meet her face or

the depth of the creases
around her eyes and lips.

I don't know
when it happened
or how, or why
I hadn't seen it before.

I think her hands
have always been
knotted and blue.
And her hair
has been white forever,
but
when did she get old?
