The Ponies of Sonora

The ponies of Sonora
Are proud........ so feisty and fine,
They wicker,
Nicker,
Prance and dance
Like feral ballerinas, uncaring and coy......

I see them rollicking, in my head, sometimes,
When I'm dreaming of Texas.......
I see
That blue sapphire sky
Reflected in
Their depthless eyes as they
Ramble under the
Noonday sun.........

The ponies of Sonora
Have golden feathers
Woven, like ribbons and roses, into their tangled
Manes and their tails.......
They shake their heads wisely
And if they could sing
They would sing of the magic of
The oceans above them soft speckled
With clouds drifting
Like sailing ships in the bewildered
Desert.......

The ponies of Sonora
Are jewels strung across the dusty beige backdrop
Of Texas in August.......
I see them.....
I see them......
The ponies of Sonora,
Running like metronomes
In time to the
Beat of those lost wild passions,
Of life
Of old Texas, long gone.......
