I took a drive down
Memory lane yesterday
I parked by the house
Where you used to live
I walked up the drive
That you used to sweep
And across the lawn
That you used to keep.
I took notice that
It's been awhile since
The paint peeled off
Of your picket fence.
As I absently sanded
Loose flecks from the wood
I thought things I shouldn't
I thought things I could.
For I've wanted your love
Since the time we first spoke
Both before and then after
Your heart was twice-broke.
I'm stirred, wet, and willing
To help spread a fresh coat
So let's don overalls,
Grab a roller and brush
And paint the fence slowly
With firm strokes unrushed,
Then build a new house
Where we both can live
A safe haven that two
Loving hearts can give,
For it's been too long
Since either of us shared
A bright, shiny picket fence.

I thought things I shouldn't
I thought things I would:
If you said to me,
"It's not meant to be"
I'd say back to you,
"Let destiny through"
And still go on praying
My dream would come true,
Unless you made certain
It couldn't be with you.
In which case,
I'd have to learn
To separate the two:
Place the dream itself
Apart from ones of you,
Yet go on believing
Even if separately
That we each deserve
To have a beautiful
White picket fence
With someone.
