"Sanity in the Stillness"
by Heather K. O'Brien

Villainess

She lies sleeping silently in the shadows
Eyes not visible as her lids are shut tight.
I pray she sleeps. She is wily and hard to read.
She will spring on you without a moments notice
Fighting with passion for her own.
What is it she wants? Where does she come from?
Why does she live in the jungles of my mind?
Creeping, catlike, to pounce on her prey.
She heeds no warnings and surrenders infrequently.
She is out now... As if you couldn't tell.
My usual musings have been slain.
She steals through the bright valleys and takes the sun with her,
Bringing in the darkest of skies.
It is evident no?
Do men harbor these beasts in their egos as well?
I call on my natives to scare her off.
And as she bounds out of sight I scream in her wake...
“Villainess!”
